The payload bay is where the Shuttle cargo is stored. It is an 18-metre long, 4.6-metre wide cylinder. The payload bay can carry cargo of up to 28,800 kilograms. Attachments on its floor and walls provide the payloads with electrical power, gas, heating or cooling, or computer access if necessary.

  13. Shuttle missions often involve servicing or retrieving satellites already in orbit. These space-to-Earth payloads are brought into the payload bay with the <a href="text">RMS</a> and then repaired or secured for the journey back to Earth.
